Jack Maguire Local History Room
Named for major benefactor Jack Maguire (1913-1985),
the Local History collection contains over 20,000
books, pamphlets, periodicals, newsletters, vault
materials, and vertical files on over 900 subjects.
The room's most popular items include Bakersfield
City Directories dating back to 1899; Kern County
Telephone directories dating back to 1940; and donated
elementary, junior high, high school, and college
yearbooks mainly from the 1960s and 1970s. Some primary
sources in the collection go as far back as the 1800s.
The collection materials do not check out and can
only be used in the Jack Maguire Local History Room.

Local History Digitization Grant Project
Kern County Library is one of twenty California libraries
participating in the Local History Digital Resources
Project. The goal of this project is to create an
online archive of two-hundred local history photographs
that are not usually seen by the public and illuminate
the multifaceted story of Kern County. Our previous
digitation project, The San Joaquin Valley and Sierra
Foothills Photo heritage collection, is available
online at http://63.146.74.36/photoheritage/ .
